Critical Articles and Reviews


DUNCAN BUSH was born in Cardiff, Wales, and educated there, then at Warwick University, Duke University (USA) and Wadham College, Oxford.

Poet, novelist, dramatist (for radio, tv, film and stage), translator, documentary writer.

His collections Aquarium and Salt were awarded the Welsh Arts Council Prize for Poetry in 1984 and 1986 respectively - both recently republished in a single volume The Hook (Seren Books). His collection Masks (Seren) was a Poetry Society Recommendation and won the 1995 Arts Council of Wales "Book Of The Year" Award.

His poetry and short fiction have appeared in numerous magazines and major anthologies, including the Penguin Book of Welsh Short Stories, Granta, The London Magazine, The New Poetry, Twentieth Century Anglo-Welsh Poetry,The Firebox. His most recent collection of poetry is Midway (Seren).

He has published two novels, The Genre of Silence , set in USSR during the Civil War (Seren, 1987) and a psychological thriller Glass Shot set in Cardiff (Secker & Warburg hardback 1991; Mandarin paperback, 1993).

He has also adapted his work for tv and radio and done commissioned work for film. Keenly interested in film, he wrote and presented the BBC Wales TV documentary Voices In The Dark: A Hundred Years of Cinema in Wales.

He has published essays on a variety of literary topics, and regularly reviews on contemporary poetry and fiction for a number of periodicals, including The London Magazine, Poetry Wales and the Luxemburger Wort.

He has in addition published numerous translations from French and Italian poetry. Duncan Bush recently retired from university teaching to concentrate on his writing, but is now doing some teaching again at the Ecole Européenne, Luxembourg. He currently divides his time between Luxembourg, France and Britain.

He is currently co-editor of The Amsterdam Review, a new bi-annual magazine featuring European literature in English or English translation.
